ERA Dance Company, Contemporary Practice

ERA Dance Company’s contemporary practice emphasizes contrasting movement dynamics, discovering how to access the body’s pliability in order to move instantly from one quality to another. An example would be a dancer moving blindingly fast then stopping on a dime and moving almost imperceptibly slow. The material investigates how momentum can be created through valuing friction and often confronts rigor and exhaustion. The company’s practice is in constant development and reflects ERA’s current choreographic undertaking.

In this practice dancers will develop an understanding of their body while off balance, falling, and in relationship to the earth. Dancers are provided with tools to safely and efficiently challenge themselves and take risks for their own development. As dancers deepen their practice, they are challenged to make live choices and performance centered decisions, nurturing their individual artistry in addition to the execution of choreography tasked to them.
